Subject:The Colbert Question
Time:03:01 am
As a dedicated Unshelved reader and Colbert Report viewer, I have to ask...

Are librarians really hiding something?

What do you guys think? (And how long before the question shows up in the strip?)

Short version, since I just posted the longer version below:

"Librarians are hiding something" is a random phrase that he decided to "trademark." It came up again last night, when he was interviewing the founder of Wikipedia and took the opportunity to "secretly" encourage viewers to vandalize the site with the phrase (to underline Wiki's unreliable nature).

Ah, Wikipedia. Lovely, lovely wikipedia.

It's got some good information in there. If I already know the facts but forgot the exact details, I'll use it. I have enough familiarity then to detect the bullshit. Otherwise... *shudder* It's a good concept, but the quality control is just lacking.

And of course librarians are hiding something! It's just that it's been hidden so well, it's no longer known and hence lost to everyone but the catalogers.

Thanks! It's just the perfect pic. And she's taken to it so well.

I don't know about anyone else, but I certainly hope I'm hiding my plans for world dominion...

"Not with that icon, you aren't," he responded, ignoring the actual annoucement.

Nothing, really. He's got this thing about Wikipedia. The usual thing, I guess. Reliability issues that come into play when anyone can alter the entries to suit their own beliefs.

Early on, he tried to "save" the elephants by encouraging people to alter the Wiki entry on them to say that their population had tripled in the last few months. Wiki embodies truth by consensus. So if it's on Wiki, and everyone believes it, then it must be true. Ergo, if we get everyone to believe that the elephant population has tripled, then the species has been "saved."

More recently, he came up with a "trademarked catchphrase": "Librarians are hiding something." Nothing more than that. No explanation. It's just a phrase he came up with and claims to have "trademarked." He wants it spread around so that he can "claim royalties."

Last night, the creator of Wikipedia was his interview guest, and Stephen took the opportunity to (again) encourage viewers to put the phrase on Wikipedia. Because he can, and (perhaps) to once again highlight Wiki's unreliability.
